Chelsea lead the spending

Chelsea have again been the window's biggest spenders. The London club agreed a £52m move for defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace late in the month, adding steel to a back line that had already been bolstered by the club-record-type arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a reported £117m. A free transfer for Harrison Bettoni rounded out a typically busy stretch of business.

Aston Villa reinvest the Rogers windfall

Rather than bank the Rogers windfall, Aston Villa pushed it straight back into the squad. The Midlands club brought in Joao Gomes from Wolves for a reported £38m and Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth north of £50m, while also agreeing a loan for winger Alejandro Garnacho. The reshuffle signals Villa's intent to stay competitive on multiple fronts.

Manchester United and the mid-market movers

Manchester United focused on value, completing a reported £35m move for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa alongside a free transfer for goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Newly promoted Ipswich Town were among the most active clubs in the division, adding Abdul Fatawu, Daizen Maeda and Issa Diop as they build a squad capable of surviving the top flight.

Notable departures

The window's headline exit saw John Stones leave Manchester City for Inter Milan on a free transfer, ending a trophy-laden spell at the Etihad. West Ham cashed in on Crysencio Summerville in a move to Al-Hilal reported to be worth up to £60m, underlining the continued pull of the Saudi Pro League on Premier League talent.

What comes next

With the window open until 11pm BST on September 1, clubs still have weeks to finalise their rosters before the 2026-27 campaign kicks off. Expect deadline-day drama as sides chase the final pieces — and as selling clubs weigh late bids for their remaining stars.
